“These Eyes Are Upon Us”

Monday, July 26th, 2010

I’m really looking forward to this show as it will feature the first ever installation piece at Curbside, and another first as it will be SmashCB ‘s first solo show.  I met SmashCB(Chris) years ago skating at the mini ramp that used to be in the Billabong store at the CAMP in Costa Mesa.  We became friends as we had so many common interests and that culminated with me ending up in the lofts where Curbside Gallery calls home.  I could go on, but I’ll let SmashCB’s publicist take it from here:

“These Eyes Are Upon Us” is a collection of new works from the mind of SmashCB.  This show will feature new paintings, as well as an intriguing installation, you won’t want to miss.

SmashCB has most recently been featured in the group shows “100 Artists See Satan Again” at the GCAC, and the Orange County Cannibal Flower show at World Gallery.
He has always been artistic — a painter, graphic designer, musician, landscape architect, urban planner, interior designer, furniture designer/maker and curator. His love for art, mid-century architecture, interior design, surfing and skateboarding all influence his quirky modern painting style.  His admiration for mid-century pop and current urban artists may seem apparent at first look, but his style is surprisingly unique, illustrated by his approach to layering the texture and color and media in order to create an exciting visual and narrative viewing experience.

Keeping checking in for updates on the progress of the installation.

Cheers

Thanks to everyone who came out and made the show a success.  Cheers, Craig!

Chantal DeFelice and “Tin Box, Wires Talk”

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

I love happy accidents and meeting new people, which is how I came about July’s show with Chantal.  I was out at the Patchwork Festival supporting my friend Christina from Le Modern Trinket and seeing what the kids are up to.  Not much was really catching my eye as I’m a guy and Patchwork definitely caters to the ladies, but on my way out there was a booth with telephone poles and wires used to display the goods.  I know most people don’t like telephone poles, but I’ve always liked them, so I had to stop.  It was Chantal’s booth and she had great handmade earrings, but she also had a couple of small paintings on bamboo substrate.  Yep, super dope cityscapes, but I wanted to see the rest of her work so I headed over to www.chantaldefelice.com and instantly wanted to do a show with her.  This of course brings us to Saturday July 17th when Curbside will be featuring Chantal’s show, “Tin Box, Wires Talk”.  It’s going to be another great show from an up and coming local artist here at Curbside, so mark your calendar.

Cheers,

Craig

Polaroid Show is this Saturday

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Here are two more items that will be available for your viewing pleasure this Saturday.  The Polaroids from Todd are hot off the handshake and Aaron’s piece is well….  A brilliant idea for keeping your info safe and secure in a way that no re-formatting of your hard drive would ever achieve.  Aaron’s been painting his old hard drives and turning them into works of art instead of criminal fodder or landfill.  I hope to see you here 7-11pm this Saturday.

Polaroid Preview

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I’ve been doing shows for a little over two years now and I’ve met a lot of amazing artists as well as a lot of really good people that I now call friends.  This show for me is a combination of new and old friends.  I’ve know Todd Matthew Clapp for over 15 years now from when he first moved out to CA from Indiana.  He’s grown up to be an amazing photographer, an all around great human being, show buddy/music nerd and I’m super happy to have him back down from the Bay Area to do a show.  Aaron probably doesn’t need an introduction at this point, but he gets one anyways.  Aaron has shown his paintings all over from Curbside, The Box Gallery, to LACMA.  I’m happy to have him back after doing a show here last year, that to be honest I thought Aaron was too successful to do a show here in the first place.  I’ve gotten to know Aaron and we’ve seen so many of the same bands play at the same shows it’s like I’ve known him for years.  Now, I just get to experience the talent and more importantly his humor first hand. This show will feature another side of Aaron with his Polaroid Photography which he’s working on a book of, but don’t fret Aaron has created a bunch of Polaroid inspired artwork as well. It’s gonna be good times.

Here’s a teaser of Aaron’s Polaroid inspired art and another of Todd’s Polaroids that will be in the show.  Were all such music nerds the titles are all from one of our favorite bands, so if you let me know the band you can knock %10 off your purchase.

Polaroid’s Not Dead!!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

That’s right Polaroid Photos are alive and well.  You need proof you say, well come check out “Polaroid Android” a new show featuring Polaroids from Aaron Kraten and Todd Matthew Clapp.  In addition to the Polaroids there will be Polaroid inspired Artwork from Aaron Kraten and Photography from Todd Matthew Clapp.  Things are really cooking here at Curbside so if you were leotarded and missed Ryan Clemens show last month this is your chance to redeem yourself.  It’ll make you want “To shake it like a Polaroid picture”.
